The Internal Revenue Service, known as the IRS, is the Treasury Department agency that collects federal taxes and enforces the tax laws Congress passes. It processes returns, issues refunds, audits taxpayers, collects unpaid taxes, and oversees tax-exempt groups.

People usually bring practical questions about filing a return, claiming deductions and credits, getting a refund or a payment plan, fixing a mistake, finding forms and transcripts, contacting the agency, and understanding how audits, penalties, and criminal tax cases work.
