Student Visas

International students must obtain a student visa to enter and study in the United States; these visas authorize study for defined programs and carry specific rules about work, duration, and dependent status.

The Three Main Student Visa Categories

The F-1 Student Visa covers academic programs at universities, colleges, secondary schools and language institutes and allows limited on‑campus work and post‑completion practical training (About the F-1 Student Visa). The M-1 Vocational Student Visa is for non‑academic or vocational training, is generally time‑limited to the program length plus a short grace period, and has stricter work prohibitions (About the M-1 Vocational Student Visa). The J-1 Visa supports exchange visitors—students, trainees, au‑pairs and researchers—through sponsored cultural and educational exchange programs with their own training and work rules (The J-1 Visa for the U.S. Exchange Visitor Program).

Eligibility, Process, and Risks

All student visas require acceptance by an approved program, proof of funds and SEVIS registration with a Form I-20 or DS‑2019, and consular processing—see detailed Requirements for a U.S. Student Visa and the step‑by‑step Studying in the USA: A Guide for International Students for practical guidance.

Know the Limits

Student status is tied to lawful compliance; participating in unauthorized activities or certain political actions can jeopardize status—read about recent enforcement issues and legal risks in Why Foreign Students Are Being Arrested at Pro‑Palestinian Protests.
