Trust in Institutions

Trust in American institutions has reached historic lows. Just 22% of Americans trust the federal government to do what is right “just about always” or “most of the time.”[5] This erosion spans corporations, which rank low despite economic influence, while small businesses top trust lists at 84%.[2]

The Partisan Divide

Trust now tracks political affiliation. Republicans’ confidence surged to 37% after recent administration changes, while Democrats’ fell to 26%—the largest party gap in decades.[2] Democrats lost trust in local governments since 2023. Events like rising political violence intensify divides.

What Americans Still Trust

Small businesses lead with majority confidence across parties. Young people trust peers, neighbors, nonprofits, and local governments more than national ones. State and local levels earn solid majorities, tied to perceived proximity and accountability.[5]

The Disconnect and Why It Matters

Trust misaligns with reality, like pessimism over a strong economy. Frustrations with institutions and fast-spreading rumors erode faith. Low trust weakens responses to crises and policies, polarizing democracy.[5]
