If you’re taking an extended vacation, working in a new city temporarily, or managing a seasonal home, you’ll need a way to get your mail. While standard mail forwarding works for some situations, those needing a more comprehensive solution for longer periods might find USPS Premium Forwarding Service (PFS) to be the answer.

What is USPS Premium Forwarding Service?

USPS Premium Forwarding Service Residential (PFS-Residential®) is designed specifically for residential customers. This service collects all your mail at your primary address’s local post office and reships it to your temporary address on a weekly schedule, typically every Wednesday, using Priority Mail® service.

For official information, visit the USPS PFS page.

What makes PFS different from standard forwarding:

  • Acts as a “portable mailbox”
  • Ensures almost all your mail follows you to your temporary location
  • Provides more comprehensive service than standard forwarding, which typically only handles First-Class Mail and periodicals

USPS launched PFS in 2005 for snowbirds and seasonal travelers who require mail forwarding for extended periods but not permanent changes.

Who Can Use PFS? Eligibility Requirements

PFS-Residential is available for:

  • Residential customers with domestic addresses within the United States

PFS-Residential is NOT available for:

  • Forwarding to or from APO, FPO, or DPO addresses
  • Forwarding to temporary addresses within the 969 3-digit ZIP Code area
  • Forwarding to US territories or possessions requiring customs declarations
  • Business delivery addresses
  • PO Boxes of size 3, 4, or 5 (exceptions may be granted)
  • Commercial Mail Receiving Agencies (CMRAs) as primary addresses

Important restrictions:

  • You cannot have an active temporary or permanent Change-of-Address Order while using PFS
  • Only one PFS application can be active for a household forwarding to a single address
  • Multiple individuals at the same address can submit separate applications if forwarding to different temporary addresses
  • For a PO Box primary address, only the box customer can apply, and it must be for the “Entire Household”

What Does PFS Cost?

USPS Premium Forwarding Service Residential has two fee components:

  1. One-time enrollment fee (non-refundable):
    • $24.70 for online enrollment
    • $26.85 for in-person enrollment at a Post Office
  2. Weekly service fee: $27.80 for each week of service

You must pay the enrollment fee when you apply. Weekly fees of $27.80 are processed as recurring payments, charged on the start date and each Wednesday thereafter.

For current pricing, check the USPS website or USPS FAQs.

How Long Can You Use PFS?

USPS Premium Forwarding Service Residential is designed for temporary relocations:

  • Minimum service period: 2 weeks
  • Maximum service period: 1 year

When setting up PFS, you’ll specify:

  • Start date: When USPS begins holding your mail for forwarding
  • End date: The last day you’ll receive mail at your temporary address

You can extend or shorten your service period after initial setup if the new duration still falls within the 2-week to 1-year timeframe.

Deadlines for modifications:

  • Online changes (cancellations or start date modifications): By midnight Central Time the day before service begins
  • Requests to extend/shorten: No later than the Monday before the last Wednesday of the current or desired end week

For more details, visit the USPS website.

How to Set Up PFS: Online Enrollment

Enrolling online is more cost-effective than enrolling in person. Visit the USPS Premium Forwarding Service Residential portal and follow these steps:

Step 1: Enter Your Primary Address

  • Indicate any existing forwarding or hold mail requests
  • Specify if forwarding is for an individual or entire household
  • Enter your name and complete primary address details
  • Provide your contact phone number and optional email
  • Click “Check Availability”

Step 2: Enter Your Temporary Address

  • Indicate if the temporary address is a business address
  • Provide complete temporary address details
  • Enter a contact phone number at the temporary address
  • Click “Check Availability”

Step 3: Set Your Forwarding Dates

  • Select your “Start Date” (when USPS begins holding your mail)
  • Choose your “Last Day at Temporary Address”
  • Set a “Resume Delivery Date” for your primary address (up to two weeks after your last day at the temporary address)

Step 4: Review and Pay

  • Review order summary and “Fees and Service Charges”
  • Read and agree to the “Terms and Conditions”
  • Click “Add to Cart” to finalize your order and proceed to payment

In-Person Enrollment Option

You can also enroll at the Post Office serving your primary address. Bring:

  • Two forms of valid identification (one must be government-issued photo ID, no credit cards)
  • Proof of residency at your primary address (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.)

If your primary address is a PO Box, you must enroll at that specific Post Office.

Benefits of PFS

PFS gives you several benefits:

  • Consolidated weekly shipments: Receive all your mail in one package via Priority Mail®
  • Priority handling for urgent mail: Registered Mail® and Priority Mail Express® are rerouted immediately upon arrival
  • Tracking notifications: Receive weekly email notifications with USPS Tracking® numbers
  • Peace of mind: Even weeks with no mail will generate an email notification
  • Independence: No need to rely on neighbors, friends, or family to collect your mail
  • Enhanced security: Prevents mailbox overflow that signals an unoccupied residence

You’ll get your mail on a predictable schedule each week. Urgent items like Registered Mail get sent right away.

When to Use PFS: Ideal Scenarios

USPS Premium Forwarding Service Residential is particularly valuable in these situations:

  • Extended travel and vacations: Perfect for trips longer than the 30-day limit of USPS Hold Mail service, especially for “snowbirds” spending winters in warmer climates
  • Temporary work or study relocation: Ideal for short-term assignments or educational pursuits without changing your permanent address
  • Seasonal home management: Easily manage mail between primary and vacation homes throughout the year
  • Home renovations: Keep receiving mail during temporary displacement from your home
  • Transitional periods: Maintain mail service while between permanent homes
  • Frequent extended travelers: Receive accumulated mail at specific locations during longer trips

PFS is most valuable when:

  • Your absence exceeds the limits of free USPS services
  • You need to receive all types of mail, not just First-Class
  • The convenience of weekly consolidated shipments justifies the cost

Important Limitations to Know

Be aware of these PFS restrictions:

  • Available only for domestic addresses within the United States
  • Cannot be used with an active standard Change of Address order
  • Some mail is handled separately from weekly shipments:
    • Accountable Mail (Certified Mail, Registered Mail)
    • Items with USPS Tracking®
    • Priority Mail Express® service
    • Standard Priority Mail® (if faster to route directly)
    • Oversized items that won’t fit in the weekly shipment container

Additional postage may be due for separately rerouted:

  • USPS Marketing Mail® parcels
  • Bound Printed Matter
  • Media Mail®
  • Library Mail
  • Parcel Select® pieces

PFS is not a guaranteed service, and USPS does not offer refunds for shipment delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I set up PFS?

At least two weeks before you need it to begin, although USPS advises allowing 7-10 days for your first delivery.

Do multiple people at one address need separate PFS requests?

For an entire household forwarding to a single temporary address, only one application is needed. For different temporary locations, separate applications are required.

Why use Premium Forwarding instead of free standard forwarding?

PFS forwards all mail types in weekly shipments, while standard forwarding only handles First-Class Mail and periodicals on a piece-by-piece basis.

Is the online system reliable?

Most users find the USPS online system convenient and efficient, though some suggest paper forms submitted directly to your local carrier might sometimes be more seamless.

What alternatives are available?

  • USPS Hold Mail (up to 30 days)
  • Standard temporary mail forwarding
  • Directly contacting important senders with your temporary address

Do mailer endorsements affect PFS reshipment?

No, mail is reshipped regardless of endorsements like “Return Service Requested.”

What about important financial mail?

While PFS will forward these items, some financial institutions have policies regarding forwarded sensitive documents. Contact your financial institutions directly to update your address.
