Department of Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a cabinet-level federal agency established in 2003 to protect the United States from threats like terrorism, natural disasters, border risks, cybersecurity breaches, and immigration violations.[1][3][6]

Disaster Response and Recovery

DHS’s largest division, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), leads emergency preparedness and disaster relief for hurricanes, wildfires, and floods.[1][3] Survivors can access Individual Assistance programs covering housing, medical care, housing assistance, vehicle damage, and medical aid. Special aid includes child care and support for immigrant families with U.S. citizen children.

Border Security and Immigration

DHS oversees borders and immigration through U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), handling enforcement, deportations, and visa programs like those for exchange visitors, transfer employees, and cultural artists.[1][3]

For FEMA aid, check eligibility, prepare documents, meet deadlines, track status, and note it does not affect Social Security or SNAP.[3]
