    • For every $3 you earn above the $62,160 limit, $1 in benefits will be withheld

    Note: These income thresholds were set in 1983 and 1993 and aren’t adjusted for inflation, meaning more people may find their benefits become taxable over time due to wage and price increases.

    The “Up to” percentage calculation can be complex. Generally, the taxable amount is the lesser of (a) the percentage (50% or 85%) of your benefits, or (b) the percentage of the amount your combined income exceeds the base threshold.     Adding work income increases your AGI, which raises your combined income.
